PLAYBOOKS

Legal playbook: Your firm's standards. Ready to apply.

Build a legal playbook from your firm's positions: preferred clauses, accepted terms, known fallbacks, and the terms you never accept; and save it to your library alongside Laine's own. Apply it whenever you run a review or during negotiation.

CAPABILITIES

What makes a playbook powerful.

From contract playbook creation to everyday use, Laine helps your firm apply the same standards across every matter.

Built through a conversation.

Setting up playbooks for law firms or in-house legal teams is a guided conversation, like everything else in Laine. It runs you through jurisdiction, document type, and which side you act for, then proposes positions clause by clause, leaving room for your own requirements. As you answer, it adds relevant questions and tracks every position you set.

Consistent reviews, across the team.

A playbook is set up once and shared across the workspace, so the same positions are a click away whoever picks up the matter. When those positions change, the playbook can be refined once and everyone works from the update.

In your library, applied on your call.

Every legal playbook you build is saved to your library, next to Laine’s own. You decide when one applies. Pick it at the start of a review when it fits the matter, and run without it when it doesn’t.

HOW TEAMS USE THIS

Playbooks in practice

MANAGING PARTNER

The firm’s review standard

A partner sets up the firm's standard positions through the guided conversation (preferred wording, acceptable fallbacks, and the terms the firm never accepts) and saves it to the library. It's there for any lawyer to apply on the next review, without being briefed deal by deal.

IN‑HOUSE COUNSEL

A procurement playbook

An in-house lawyer builds a playbook for inbound vendor contracts (the data-protection terms, liability caps, and audit rights the business requires). When a vendor's paper comes in, they apply it to the review and non-standard terms surface against those positions straight away.

ASSOCIATE

Reviewing counterparty paper

A junior associate is handed a counterparty's draft. They pick the law firm’s playbook from the library, run the review, and Laine flags every off-position clause with the preferred wording on hand, so the work reflects the firm's standard from the first pass.

Where playbooks apply

Choose a legal playbook from your library when you start a review, and Laine measures the document against your positions instead of the market’s. Support for applying playbooks in negotiation is on the way, so the same standards will carry through to marking up counterparty paper.

What is a playbook?

A playbook is your firm’s positions on a document type, saved into Laine: the clauses you prefer, the terms you accept, your fallbacks, and the terms you never accept. You apply it to a review so the analysis reflects how your firm practices rather than the market default. Applying playbooks in negotiation is on the way.

What is a contract playbook?

A contract playbook is your firm’s positions on a specific contract type, saved into Laine: the clauses you prefer, the terms you accept, your fallbacks, and the terms you never accept. You apply it to a review so the analysis reflects how your firm handles that contract type, rather than a generic standard.

How do I build a playbook?

Through a guided conversation, the same way you draft and review in Laine. It runs you through jurisdiction, document type, and which side you act for, then proposes positions clause by clause and leaves room for your own requirements. Your inputs are tracked as you go, and you can edit or refine any answer at any time.

Does Laine come with ready-made playbooks?

Yes. Your library includes Laine-native playbooks alongside the ones you create, so you can apply a sensible default straight away or use one as a starting point and adapt it to how your firm practices.

Are playbooks applied automatically?

No. You choose which playbook to apply, and when. Pick one from your library at the start of a review and Laine measures the document against those positions. Run a review without one and it benchmarks against market standard instead. Use a playbook when it’s relevant and skip it when it isn’t.

Can I change a playbook after I've made it?

Any time. Your answers are kept, so you reopen the playbook and adjust it as your positions evolve rather than starting over. Updated positions apply to the reviews you run from then on.

Are my playbooks kept private?

Yes. Your playbooks and your documents are yours alone. Data is stored locally in each jurisdiction, processed briefly, and your content is never retained or used to train shared models. Laine meets ISO 27001, GDPR, SOC 2 Type II, and CCPA/CPRA standards.
