Overview
Editing happens in a Word-like editor inside Laine, so there is no downloading a copy to change one line and uploading it again afterwards. The document you are working in is the document Laine is reading.
That matters because a change is rarely local. A new definition affects the cross-references, a deleted clause affects whatever relied on it, and a renamed party affects every page. Laine looks at the whole document, not the paragraph in front of it.
Ways to make a change
Use whichever is quickest for the edit in front of you
Ask in the chat
Describe the change and Laine finds the place itself. Useful when you know what you want the document to say but not where it currently says it.
Select the text first
Highlight a clause or a sentence and it is copied into the chat, where you can carry on working on it. The edit stays scoped to what you selected.
Insert a new clause
Ask for a provision the document is missing. Laine drafts it in the language of the surrounding text and places it where it belongs.
Type it yourself
Edit by hand anywhere in the document. Laine keeps track of what your change affects elsewhere and tells you when something no longer lines up.
Work on my comments
Leave comments in the document as you read, then press Work on my comments and Laine takes them all in one pass.
Every change Laine makes arrives as a tracked change, so nothing lands in the document without your say. Accept or reject them one at a time, or read them together before deciding.
The traditional redline is there as well: every insertion and deletion marked, attributed, and reversible. Take it through as many rounds as the negotiation needs, then export clean to Word when the drafting is settled.
Consistency check
The check runs automatically once drafting is finished, and you can run it any time you want a second look. It reads the document end to end for the things that survive a careful read: a defined term used but never defined, a cross-reference pointing at the wrong clause, numbering that skips, language that drifts between one section and the next.
Each finding is flagged in place, so you can see the clause it came from before you decide what to do about it.
Set up the window
The layout follows the work. Move between the three as you go, depending on whether you are reading, writing, or asking.
Side by side
Every window open at once, with the chat next to the document. The default for working through a draft.
Chat only
For thinking a problem through with Laine before touching the document.
Editor only
The full width for the document, for a long read or a careful pass by hand.
Everything else in the editor behaves the way it does in Word, so there is nothing new to learn before you start.
